Irlen Syndrome can affect many different areas, including:

  • Poor sports performance
  • Poor depth-perception
  • Low motivation
  • Low self-esteem

When a child is reminded to look inside the siddur (prayer book) but insists on  davening by heart, we often tend to blame it on a lack of will , laziness, attitude etc.  What about the child who actually tries to pay attention in class , studies at home and still scores lower grades then expected? We may think he is not trying hard enough .  When dealing with this type of situation, it is easy to become angry, frustrated, or upset.

Scotopic sensitivity occurs when certain wavelengths of light interfere with the visual pathway between the eye and the brain. This condition is known as irlen.

People with this condition are generally  sensitive to light and sometimes see images and moving , swirling shapes when looking at a printed page, which makes it very difficult to read .

  1. The myth in the educational system has been, and still is, that repetition and instruction will take care of the problem. in reality, however, if you don’t find the underlying problem, you won’t make progress-even with good instruction or repetition.  Practice not always makes  perfect.  If you have irlen  kria problems,  the longer you try,  the harder it becomes to read.
